In Limmersorf near Thurnau, you can marvel at the oldest dancing lime tree in Upper Franconia. It is already over 300 years old. Since 1729, people have been dancing on it without interruption during the Lindenkirchweih at the end of August.

The small village of Limmersdorf near Thurnau is home to one of the six "danced" lime trees in Germany. Dancing lime trees are fascinating tree houses that bear witness to a unique - living - tradition.

The Limmersdorf dancing lime tree - probably planted in 1686 - is the oldest of the Upper Franconian dancing lime trees. It has a trunk circumference of 4 meters and a wide-spreading crown. The dance floor and the musicians‘ house rest on historic sandstone pillars at a height of 3 meters.

The "Tanzbruck" of this natural monument is only covered with boards and provided with a staircase during the church fair. The lime tree has been danced on since 1729 - and is the only one of all the dancing lime trees to have been danced on without interruption. The typical Franconian church fair takes place around the lime tree, on the "Plootz", in a very special atmosphere.

In 2015, the Limmersdorf church fair was added to the national list of intangible cultural heritage.

There is an exhibition on dancing lime trees and dancing lime tree customs around the dancing lime tree, which is accessible free of charge all year round.

The Limmersdorf Lindenkirchweih with dancing on and under the lime tree is celebrated every year on the days around Bartholomä (August 24, if this is a Sunday - or one week later).
