Thurnau Castle - One of the largest and most important castle complexes in northern Bavaria.

Thurnau Castle is located in the middle of the historic pottery village of Thurnau. Founded in the 13th century as a "tower in the meadow" by the Förtsche family of knights and constantly expanded, the castle is now one of the largest inner-town castle complexes in Franconia. Today, the castle is home to the Research Institute for Music Theater and the Institute for Franconian Regional History at the universities of Bayreuth and Bamberg. Hotel Schloss Thurnau, which is also located here, is a popular location for weddings, conferences and celebrations of all kinds. With markets, concerts, open-air cinema, theater and readings, events take place within the historic walls all year round. Parts of Thurnau Castle can be visited as part of a guided tour.
